To qualify for PMP certification, PMI requires candidates to meet one of two pathways:
Four-Year Degree Holders:
- 36 months of experience leading projects
- 35 contact hours of project management education (PDUs)
High School Diploma or Associate's Degree:

The current PMP exam format consists of:
- 180 questions (mix of multiple choice, multiple response, matching, hotspot, and fill-in-the-blank)
- 230 minutes total testing time (approximately 3 hours 50 minutes)
- Two 10-minute breaks scheduled after questions 60 and 120
- Computer-based testing at Pearson VUE test centres or online proctored
The exam content is divided across three domains: People (42%), Process (50%), and Business Environment (8%). Approximately half of the exam focuses on predictive (waterfall) project management approaches, while the other half covers agile and hybrid methodologies.
Most candidates need 8 to 12 weeks to prepare for the PMP exam, depending on their project management experience and study schedule.
